Yesterday, I finished a short story book club cycle at the public library<\/a>. I love all the weekly events they organize in the libraries of Menorca. If you stay tuned, there\u2019s always something worthwhile. This month was Lucia Berlin\u2019s turn, famous for her story collectionA Manual for Cleaning Women<\/a>. \u201cI write to be read,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I loved her way of narrating the everyday. I was also surprised by her life, which blends so much into her stories that you can\u2019t tell where one ends and the other begins. I like that. Discovering writers through their writing, even if it\u2019s not autobiographical (or maybe it is). In this post, I leave you with a piece of my own<\/a> one that\u2019s not about me (or maybe it is).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Era una tarde de verano en la casa de campo de mis abuelos. Est\u00e1bamos bajo la sombra de la parra, sentados en la mesa de piedra que tanto costaba mover. El sonido de las cigarras era como un ruido blanco de fondo, omnipresente en esa \u00e9poca. Ten\u00eda clara mi misi\u00f3n. Les hab\u00eda pedido a mis abuelos que me contaran su historia. Quer\u00eda tenerla retenida entre tinta y papel para siempre. Era el turno de mi abuelo y mi abuela tej\u00eda su \u00faltima obra de arte y nos escuchaba. Su historia y mis preguntas. Mi abuelo recordaba sin esfuerzo mientras se mec\u00eda en su balanc\u00edn. Y yo, sonre\u00eda y escrib\u00eda sobre la mesa de piedra fr\u00eda. Mis cabellos todav\u00eda mojados, dejaban un rastro de gotas. Algunas ca\u00edan entre mis pies descalzos y otras arrugaban el papel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes, as the years go by, you look back and say, \u201cThat was the beginning of\u2026\u201d or \u201cWe were so happy back then\u2026\u201d before\u2026 after\u2026 Or you think, \u201cI\u2019ll be happy when\u2026\u201d \u201cOnce I get\u2026\u201d \u201cIf we had\u2026\u201d\nBut Hern\u00e1n knew he was happy now.<\/p>\nLucia Berlin<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
