Pocket attitude. Become the front singer of your life.

n life, you can always remain a spectator or act in the background, or get up on stage and be the soloist. What do you choose? MLF, June 2023.

This September, I've started a new project. It seems like a good month for new beginnings. They all are. But this month, with the start of the school year and the end of vacation... it’s especially fitting to sit down and start over. Or from scratch. It's a time for reflection and a good moment to redirect your life..

In this post, I’ll share my projects for this "new school year" and the lesson that pushed me to start writing today.

The beginning is half of everything..

PYTHAGORAS OF SAMOS

New Year, New Me

I stopped studying years ago. But I like to think I've never stopped learning. In fact, I always try to embark on new challanges. Usually, these involve new learning. And that motivates me. A lot.

The legacy of school years leads me to rethink these new challenges in September. Whenever you're reading this, today is the second-best day to start that new project you have in mind. The best day was yesterday.

So, at the end of August, when I sat down to imagine my routine, I set three goals: start tennis lessons, attend yoga classes regularly, and finally, join the gospel choir I’ve had my eye on since the beginning of the year. So, last Wednesday, off I went to the audition. The worst that could happen was that they'd say no.

Don’t be afraid to take the leap

By Friday, they told me I was in. I felt a bit like I was in the “OT” academy, I won’t lie. As for the rest, I’m still looking for a spot in a tennis group near home. And this week I have my first yoga class scheduled at a studio that looks very promising. So, you could say I’ve already taken the first steps. What would you like to start?

Stop reading and sign up now. The moments that make us feel most alive are those when we step outside our comfort zone.

Go for that "solo"

Just yesterday, we had our first meeting with the choir members. There are so many of us. I was a little nervous about showing up alone in a place where most people already knew each other. But they were incredibly welcoming and made me feel right at home. Sometimes the fear or embarrassment is more in our heads than in real life.

At this meeting, we watched a documentary about the role of backup singers in music, from the 1960s to today. There were many messages, but what stuck with me is that there are incredibly talented backup singers who found it extremely hard to take the step to become soloists. And others who never made it. Many were even better than a lot of the singers and groups of their time.

It’s okay to learn and grow in the shadows. To wait for your moment. But when it comes, have the courage to take the leap and go for that solo. Success belongs to the brave.

Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did, so throw off the bowlines and sail away from your comfort zone. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore, Dream, Discover..
