Attitude pocket. ¿How can you have your motivation back?

Formentera, may 2021

I'm a bundle of nerves. A motivated person in life, in a good way. Those who know me are aware that I tend to be involved in many projects all the time. I sign up for anything and everything. That doesn't mean I don't have my sad days, times when I feel down and need some TLC, just like everyone else. But in general, it's true that I am an active person with high intrinsic motivation. So, here's my introduction in case you've just arrived.

The secret of happiness is not always doing what one wants but wanting what one does.

Leon Tolstoy

Where does my motivation come from?

Ever since I read Robin Sharma's book, "The Manifesto for Everyday Heroes"I've become more aware of these sources of motivation. He calls them the "Big 5 in Life." These are supposed to act as a lighthouse guiding our daily actions and, consequently, our routine and our life.

Good daily decisions lead to fulfilling days. Fulfilling days lead to fantastic weeks. Weeks add up to months, and months turn into years, creating a life of great fulfillment. Or so Robin says. I'm working on it.

In my case, my 5 major sources of motivation are:

  • Helping🙂
  • Being honest with myself and others, even if it means going against expectations. It's a cliché, but having my thoughts, words, and actions in harmony improves everything.
  • Exercising and working towards bienestar physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
  • My family. Spending time and enjoying moments with them, sharing their joys, worries, and dreams, is a cornerstone of my routine.
  • Enjoying quality time, being aware, and appreciating the luck I have. I'll talk more about this in detail later, but I firmly believe that time is our greatest wealth.

In addition to these Big 5, turning my actions into habits has radically changed how I organize myself.

The importance of habits

can't help but mention James Clear's book,Atomic Habits. It's available in the national digital library (at least in the Balearic Islands). I believe it's a book worth (re)reading and extracting the main ideas. Let me summarize them in case they can help you:

  • % of our daily actions are done unconsciously. These are habits, automatisms. Depending on the habits you reinforce, you'll have different consequences in your routine.
  • To start building a habit, make it attractive and easy. Simply putting on workout clothes and going to the gym, even if you don't work out, is enough. (Yes, it may sound strange, but it works. Most of the time, the hardest part is starting.)
  • Being able to change habits involves reflecting on what kind of person you are (or want to become). From your identity , you can influence your actions and routines, but not the other way around.
  • Actions can be positive, neutral, or negative. Make a list of your daily actions and note their rating on the side. This way, you can see where to start making changes.
  • If you can be 1% better every day, you'll be 37 times better at the end of the year. If you're 1% worse every day, your performance will approach zero.

Attitude is the key

As Victor Küppers discusses in his book "Living life with meaning", in life attitude multipies. Knowledge and skills are important, but the key lies in the attitude we bring to our daily lives.

Extract of Victor Küppers' book

Victor, as a fantastic communicator, perfectly summarizes the possibilities we have to influence our environment through examples, stories, and quotes. Even on a small scale, everything adds up.

Some ideas I want to share from his book are:

  • People are like walking light bulbs. Some emit 20,000 watts of energy in life, while others are dim. It's in our hands how much energy we radiate to those around us.
  • Everyone has problems. The key is how you respond to these problems and how much you value the positive aspects of your life (which are always there).
  • Life is simple. Not easy, but simple.
  • People prefer to be around joyful and humorous individuals rather than those with an excellent resume who are gloomy. This applies in any context, not just professionally.

Whatever you choose to find lost motivation or increase the motivation you have, I believe the key is to strive every day to become better people. Above all, to be individuals whom we can look back on and feel proud of. See you soon and happy reading!

-Who I'm gonna be?

-Yes

-Aren't I gonna be me?
